Description
George Washington Pierce, a student at Bowdoin College, wrote to his sister Harriot of Baldwin, explaining that he had not written sooner because he was occupied with writing his graduation part, "The effects of the late struggles in South America and Greece on Literature and Liberty."
He said he needed to know how many family members would attend his graduation so he could find boarding houses for them.
Pierce also wrote that he was going to give an oration the morning after commencement and Henry Longfellow, also a member of the Bowdoin Class of 1825, would deliver a poem at the same time.
