Description
George W. Pierce (1805-1835) wrote to his mother, Phebe Pierce of Baldwin, to tell her he had opened his law office in Portland.
Pierce had traveled West in 1828 and 1829, looking for opportunities there, but decided to return to Maine and practice law in Portland.
He wrote, "You have now the gratification of a wish often expressed, that you might like to see me settled in business."
He said he intended to be successful and wrote, "I intend to be prudent and industrious, to keep in my office, and by my conduct produce a conviction on the public mind that 'young Pierce cares more about his profession and business than about anything else in the world.'"
He also assured his mother he would not let passion deter him from his law work, and would be cautious if he felt "inclined to change the condition of single blessedness."
