Description
This October 1868 certificate formally admitted James C. Ledyard to the Solar Lodge of the Masonic Lodge. At this time the chapter met in a hall in one of Ledyard's downtown buildings, the Ledyard Block at the corner of Centre and Water Streets. According to Parker McCobb Reed's 1894 "History of Bath and Environs," the Solar Lodge of Free Masons was begun in 1804 by a number of men including: William King, who became the first governor of Maine; Andrew Greenwood, the first lawyer in Bath; Tileston Cushing, the master builder of the South Meeting House in Bath; and William Pitt Ledyard, the grandfather of James C. Ledyard. At one point there were five active lodges of Masons within Bath. The form of the certificate itself was designed and drawn by John R. Penniman of Boston and engraved by D. Newcomb of Portland, Maine.
