Charles T. Lord to wife, Baton Rouge, 1863

Contributed by Patten Free Library

Description

Writing from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to his wife Nellie in Bath, of May 29, 1863, Charles T. Lord told of the regiment's battle at Port Hudson.

He did not know that despite the 2000-plus Union casualties that had occurred already, the longest siege in American history was only a week into its 48 days.

He mentioned his fear and gave information about his health and that of his fellow soldiers.

Charles T. Lord (1834-1905) lived in North Bath and ran the tannery for many years at the time of his death. He married Ellen P. (Nellie) Rogers (1840-1910) in 1861, the year before he enlisted. Bath's Muster Roll shows that he was discharged in August of 1863, after serving in Company C of the 21st Maine Regiment.

The same dates of enlistment and discharge for the same company were noted for John H. Rogers, Nellie's younger brother. The "Maine Volunteers" listed Jesse Baker as a corporal in Company C of the 21st; he was discharged in August of '63 also, having survived his wounds.

"Guss" likely referred to Augusta Sapphire, Ellen's older sister who married Nathaniel P. Bryant in February of 1862. The Lords had seven children, six of whom were living at the time of his death. The oldest child was Mabel, to whom Lord referred in the letter.
