Description
This quitclaim for property on Centre Street was executed the year after Maine's first governor, William King (1768-1852), died. William King came to Bath in the year 1800. He appears to have wed Ann N. Frazier (1782-1857) of Boston, shortly after his move to the city. According to the biography of King by Marion Jacques Smith, the couple's first child was Mary Elizabeth King (1817-1847), whose health was severely impaired by complications of scarlet fever. Their second child was Cyrus William King (1819-1881). While the first thirty years In Bath seemed golden for King and his business and political affairs, later years brought more economic downturns and difficulties for the former governor. Jacques Smith wrote that after Mary Elizabeth's death, William King's health declined and his mind appeared confused.
The family ran into trouble, having to mortgage properties and even retract pledges of funds for Bowdoin College. After his death, Ann King moved to Portland to live with her son Cyrus. King's library was purchased by George F. and John Patten and then presented to the Patten Library Association. In another attempt to insure a more secure financial position for herself, Ann King sold her dower right to William Ledyard in this quitclaim for an annuity, rather than a single lump payment.
