Description
This detail of the United States Geological Survey 7.5 Minute Bath Quadrangle topographical map shows most of the city of Bath, a long, narrow division of land aligned to the water. The city, once known as Long Reach, stretches along the western edge of the Kennebec River where various geological processes created an extended sandy-bottomed shore that was well adapted for the construction of vessels. For almost the entire existence of this "City of Ships" its economy has depended heavily on maritime industry.
