Description
In celebration of the centennial of its founding, the Presque Isle Centennial Committee sponsored the cultivation and distribution of potatoes as a gift to the governors of the then just recently expanded 50 states in the Union.
Note the drawing of the SNARK missile which was then being installed at the Presque Isle Air Force Base and was a great source of pride for the community. At its height, the 702nd Strategic Missile Wing employed 1200 military personnel and 300 civilians at an annual expenditure of $8 million per year. The 702nd Strategic Missile Wing was inactivated on June 25, 1961. The air base was repurposed as the Presque Isle Airport and the Presque Isle Industrial Park.
