Rear Admiral Robert E. Peary in dress uniform, ca. 1910

Contributed by Maine State Museum

Description

Shown here in dress uniform, Maine resident Rear Admiral Robert E. Peary claimed his arrival at the North Pole on April 6, 1909.

Peary reached the 90° latitude with the help of Matthew Henson, his African-American assistant, and four Inuit men: Ootah, Egigingwah, Seegloo, and Ooqueah. Although still debated, the United States Government officially recognized the group in 1911 as the first to reach the North Pole.

Peary made his home on Eagle Island, a site today operated and maintained by Maine's Bureau of Parks and Lands.
