Description
This black and white winter photograph of the First Baptist Church of Paris Hill shows the church and common as they look today. This church building was dedicated in December, 1838. Originally it had only a bell tower. The clock was added to the top in 1883 and was given to the town by Hon. Hannibal Hamlin. The bell still chimes the hour to this day, (2009).
Beyond the church are several homes built in the early 1800s. To the left of the church is a house built by Benjamin Doe in 1829. Partially visible to the right of the church is a house built in 1827 by Jesse Cummings. To the right of that is a house now known as the "Lyons Den" owned by Harry Lyon, who navigated the first flight across the Pacific, from California to Australia, in 1928. The house was originally built as a store in 1807 by Simeon Cummings.
