Description
This image of Portland Breakwater illustrates the new lighthouse structure built in 1875, modeled after the Greek Choragic Monument of Lysicrates from the fourth century B.C. Known locally as "Bug Light," the cast-iron tower sits on a cylinder surrounded by six fluted columns. The station was established in 1855. The lighthouse was automated in 1934 but discontinued in 1942. Bug Light was "relighted" in 2002.
