Description
This picture is of James Montgomery Flagg, famous artist, illustrator and Biddeford Pool summer resident. Flagg worked in media ranging from fine art painting to cartooning, but is best remembered for his posters, his most famous being the "I Want YOU for the US Army" recruiting poster featuring Uncle Sam pointing his finger. The photographer, Robert Gay, wrote "sample" on the top of the image, and this was probably a proof-copy shown to Flagg prior to his placing an order with the photographer. Other snapshots taken of the artist were printed as postcards.
