Description
For many years the sandpaper mill was one of Hallowell's principal industries, starting in the early 1870s. Quartz was crushed to be used in the manufacture of sandpaper.
Originally part of Ben Tenney's factory complex along Vaughan Stream, the mill was later reorganized as the Boston Flint Company. A fire in April 1893 almost forced the closure of the mill, but it continued in operation until 1922.
