Description
This aerial view shows a section of Hallowell between Winthrop, Second, Central and Middle streets as it appeared around 1920. The long narrow buildings were Hallowell Granite Works storage sheds. The large factory building at the upper left housed the Johnson Shoe Company, with the Worster House hotel below. To the right of the shoe company, in front of the largest shed, is Hallowell Granite Works office building, now the home of Brahms-Mount Textiles on Central Street. The street running from middle left to lower right in the picture is Winthrop Street hill. Many of the other buildings are private homes or housing for granite workers.
