Description
The Laughton School, located at the Lord farm on outer Central Street, was one of Hallowell's two rural schools. It was built on land purchased from the Gilmans in 1870. The Hallowell School Committee acknowledged a near rural rebellion at the Laughton School during the 1877-1878 school year. The Committee reported "Five different teachers have been employed in the Laughton school in the past two years. We cannot give any flattering report of this school, for parents and others living in this locality have been in constant quarrel and trouble among themselves, and have the school and the school teacher to quarrel over. Others have written the members of the school board anonymous letters...(that they)...would do well to avoid showing."
Mary Mosher taught at the Laughton School in the 1930s. Today the school is a private residence.
