Description
The J.R. Bodwell was built in Searsport and named after Joseph R. Bodwell, Maine Governor and owner of the Hallowell Granite Works. The ship is believed to be the type used for the transportation of granite. Marion Maines, the sister of the man who owned the painting, noted on the back of the photograph that the watercolor was sold ca. 1991 for $25,000.
Joseph R. Bodwell owned granite quarries in Vinalhaven as well as Hallowell. He served as mayor of Hallowell for two terms and was elected Governor of Maine in 1887. Governor Bodwell died in office December 15, 1887.
