Description
Men pose out front of "Crow's Nest" cottage, Fortune's Rocks (Biddeford), ca. 1875. Crow's Nest was the summer home of John Berry (1847-1909), a successful druggist from Biddeford-Saco. Mr. Berry was born and raised in Biddeford, the son of Judge William & Olivia G. (Dudley) Berry, and graduated from the high school in 1864. He studied to be an apothecary under Dr. James Sawyer of Biddeford, and after taking two years as a railroad ticket agent in Biddeford, purchased Dr. Sawyer's business in the Thacher Block.
He had three patents on apothecary equipment which he invented. Two items, Berry's Pressure Percolator (1882) and Berry's Pharmacy Still (1885) were quite extensively used in the druggist trade. The pieces of these items were manufactured elsewhere but were assembled at a facility on the corner of Foss and Main Streets, Biddeford, where he rented out the entire top floor.
