Description
Joppa, Joppi to old timers, is located between Temple Street and Vaughan Stream to the south. It included a shipyard, commercial establishments and dwellings. To this day, no one has been able to document why the area is called Joppa. There are many theories but no proof. A history of Bangor notes an area along the Penobscot named Joppa as well.
This photograph was most likely taken from the steeple of the old South Congregational Church. A ship can be seen tied to a pier in the background that was used to load ice from the Knickerbocker Ice House on Sheppards Point.
