Description
Alice Caroline Furbish (1856 - 1931) was the Librarian at the Portland Public Library from 1882 to 1925. When she took the position in 1882 the semi-public library was known as the Portland Institute and Public Library, becoming the (free) Portland Public Library in 1889. She was also a member of the Massachusetts Library Club.
It is stated in the annual report for fiscal year January 1925 - March 1926, "After over forty years of earnest service, Miss Alice C. Furbish resigned as librarian, giving up work to the present librarian July 1, 1925. The good wishes of all go to Miss Furbish, with the hope that she may have many years filled with enjoyment of life." Miss Furbish wrote all the "Librarian's Report" for the annual reports, which go back to 1890.
Gertrude Simpson was born about July 1856. Her parents were Aaron L. and Coretti W. Simpson and lived in Bangor. Miss Simpson was a school teacher.
Miss Simpson had a love of music and singing. She belonged to the Maine Music Festival Chorus for its entire 30 years of existence, 1897-1928.
