Description
With his parents' consent, in 1863 at the age of 17, Ray P. Eaton (1846-1915) enlisted as a sargeant in Company G, 32nd Maine Infantry. His regiment joined the Army of the Potomac, and in July became acting sargeant major. On July 30, in the Battle of the Crater in front of Petersburg, a confederate sharpshooter fired at close range wounded the commander of the regiment, and the same shot shattered Major Eaton's left arm at the elbow. His arm was amputated that December. Major Eaton was a patient at Campbell Hospital, Washington, D.C..
About 1865, after being discharged from the hospital, he entered the U.S. Treasury Department. In 1875, he was appointed to the Postal Service. Major Eaton accepted an appointment as Deputy Collector of Customs in Bath in 1881. After resigning, he entered in the oil business. In 1902 he was elected Register of Deeds for Cumberland County and served four years. Major Eaton then engaged in real estate and insurance business in Brunswick. He was recorder of the Brunswick Municipal Court for several terms.
Major Eaton was chosen as a honorary bearer at Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain's (Civil War Hero) funeral in February 27, 1914.
