Description
May 30, 1928 dedication of the William Merrill Monument on Main St. The monument has three commemorative panels. This memorial was erected in 1928 by William Merrill's only son, Edwin R. a year after his father's death.
William Merrill, son of Reul and Lucy Merrill, was born April 13, 1844, and died either June 11 or June 16, 1927. He served in the Civil War as a member of Co. B of the 25th Infantry Regiment, which mustered into U.S. service at Portland on Sept. 29, 1862, and mustered out on July 10, 1863.
The FRONT PANEL: In commemoration of the men of Cumberland, Maine, who served their country on land and sea in all wars of the nation.
The RIGHT PANEL: The demands for loyalty to a country is as great upon the sons as they are upon the sires. The safety of the country lies in the intelligence, the moral character, the patriotism of its citizens.
The LEFT PANEL: Cumberland honors her sons and daughters who have shown their loyalty, self-sacrifice, and devotion to preserve and cement the Union in the days of the Civil War, 1861-1865.
