Description
View of the abandoned American Can Company factory building in Lubec, ca. 1987. The development of modern machine-made tin-plated steel cans in the late 19th century led to mergers of small plants into the Continental and the American can companies in 1901. The larger of the two, the American Can completed its huge plant in Lubec 1908 and became a major local employer. Almost a million cans a day, mostly for the regional fishing industry, were turned out during this facility’s peak operation. The Lubec factory functioned about 55 years, part-time in its final days. Eventually a rear corner of the abandoned structure fell off into the bay as shown in this photo.
