Fire in Bangor, 1891

Contributed by Bangor Public Library

Description

A fire in Pickering Square in Bangor on 29 March 1891. The cause of the fire was never determined, but it caused some $8,000 in damage to several businesses: Kirkpatrick & Jameson, grocers; Page & Carey, F.L. Jones & Co., J. K. Mayo & Co., and G.W. Merrill Furniture Co.--the latter had already survived nine previous fires. The alarm was rung at nine o'clock in the morning, although it was alleged that the alarm box lock would not accept the key and had to be pried open, causing delay. The fire department had a struggle to contain the flames, which, if they spread, could have ignited much of the business district. The flammable nature of the Merrill finishing and upholstering rooms added to the urgency of the situation. Here, the spectators observe firefighters tackling the blaze in the Merrill building.
