Description
In the wake of the Bangor Fire, much of the downtown district was left in ruins. In this view from the Merrill Trust Building, encompassing Harlow and Park Street, the remains of the Universalist church, one of the first to catch fire, can be seen at the upper left, while those of the Center Congregational church, a fine example of Gothic architecture, are on the upper right. The shell of the Federal Building occupies the left of the image. Four other churches and a synagogue were also destroyed. Bangor immediatly began to clear away rubble and rebuild; in the center of the photograph the construction and clearing crews can be seen at work, along with several sheds and temporary structures.
