Men's National Anti-Suffrage Association letter, Boston, 1917

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Robert N. Turner, executive secretary of the Men's National Anti-Suffrage Association, headquartered in Boston, wrote to Margaret Hale of Portland about a letter the Maine Association Opposed to Suffrage for Women planned to send to pro-suffrage organizations asking them to stop all campaigning for a suffrage referendum because the country had entered World War I.

Turner said he thought sending the letter would be "wholly unwise."

He said of the pro-suffrage groups, "They will take absolutely unfair and unwarranted advantage of any opening."
