Description
Responding to local people requesting a fresh fish market, Lubecker John P. McCurdy (who supplied this formation) and Angelo Ciocca from away opened such a market in the former Columbian building sometime during the early 1980s. Ciocca was a ground fish buyer and seller in a building on the Pumping Station road. Lubec Seafood offered available fresh fish, including lobster, live or cooked. However the business was not profitable due to the low number of customers and closed after being open for one summer season.
The building, locally known as the “Old Columbian,” was erected in the early years of the 20th century as a company store for a packing firm of that name located on the nearby shore behind the structure on the shore. Many businesses occupied it after that firm closed about 1932. Ownership remained in the McCurdy family for many decades. Located at 135 Main Street, also known as “County Road” or Route 189, as of 2010 the building houses the Lubec Historical Society and Tours of Lubec and Cobscook.
