Description

John Merrick (1766-1862) came to Hallowell as tutor or companion with the family of Benjamin Vaughan in 1797. He married Rebecca Vaughan, daughter of Samuel Vaughan, and settled in Hallowell. He soon became very involved in local affairs, especially education and local government. Merrick was an active and respected member of the community until his death at age 95.
