Main Street, Presque Isle, ca. 1910

Contributed by Penobscot Marine Museum

Description

Businesses along Main Street in Presque Isle include Merchants Bank and Trust, H. L. Crouse Presque Isle Bakery, and "Photograph Rooms."

As was the case with many towns, Presque Isle grew following construction of a mill, in this case, a grist mill. The town was first known as "Fairbanks" after the first settler.

Potato farming -- for seed, starch, and table stock -- was the dominant economic activity. In 1913, Presque Isle businessmen convinced the state to fund Aroostook Farm, a demonstration farm that experimented in modern potato production.
