Description
Rev. Herring (1820-1913) was chosen pastor of the Maine Street Baptist Church in 1865. The church was erected in 1840. In 1867, during his pastorate a vestry was built; the meeting-house was repaired, remodeled and greatly improved, at a cost of $2,000; the pulpit and platform were remodeled and finished in black-walnut and chestnut, to correspond with the newly arranged pews, which were also made of chestnut and without doors; the aisles were carpeted; the ceiling was frescoed; and gas fixtures were put in. Mr. Herring resigned his pastorate July 26, 1868.
