Description

An illustration of a silk reeling machine appears in The Cabinet Cyclopaedia book on "Useful Arts, A Treatise on the Origin, Progressive Improvement, and Present State of Silk Manufacture," published in London in 1831.

This reeler has a charcoal heater under the hot-water basin. The reeler is an example of the type of mechanical improvements ongoing in the 1830s.

The letter "A" refers to a copper boiler about 18 inches long and six inches deep with a charcoal fire under it. "BB" is a wooden frame to support several parts of the reel. "D" is the reel on which the silk will be wound. "bc" is the wheel-work.
