Description
Josiah Pierce (1827-1913), a student at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, wrote to his family about the extremely high water in the Androscoggin River.
He commented that two mills had been carried away and that a boom broke, releasing 2,000 logs. He said the water was touching the bridge, the roads were flooded, and there was concern about houses floating away.
He also comments about the construction of the "new college" and his having nearly completed 1/8 of his college education.
