Description
Josiah Pierce (1827-1913) wrote to his father in Gorham, discussing the school he was keeping over winter break from his studies at Bowdoin College.
He commented that a schoolmaster's popularity is more dependent on what he does outside of school than in the classroom.
He said the parents include Democrats, Universalists, Whigs, Native Americans, Liberty partisans, Conservatives, Congregationalists, Freewill Baptist, Methodists, furious abolitionists and one man in favor of slavery.
