Description
Josiah Pierce (1827-1913) of Gorham was in Michigan to persuade his uncle, Daniel Pierce, to return to Maine.
He visited Ann Arbor and wrote to his father about the town and the university. He drew sketches of some of the university buildings and compared the holdings of the library to that of Bowdoin, his and his father's alma mater.
Pierce wrote the end of the letter aboard a steamer on Lake Michigan and at other locations on his travels west. The letter spans seven days May 7 to May 13, 1847.
