Description
Josiah Pierce (1827-1913) reported to his father, Josiah Pierce of Gorham, in 1849 on his first two weeks in London, at the beginning of a nine-month tour of the British Isles and Europe.
Pierce, an 1846 graduate of Bowdoin College, studied law with his father and passed the bar exam before leaving for his European tour.
He comments on the noise and level of activity in London, the world's largest city and of seeing Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, and two of their children. He also comments on many of the historic and tourist sites in the city.
He notes the unsettled political situation in Europe and says he has been told that he still will be able to travel safely because he is an American.
