Description
Seeking a diplomatic appointment, Josiah Pierce (1827-1913), a Portland lawyer, visited Washington, D.C., at the time of Franklin Pierce's inauguration.
Josiah and his family were long-time Democrats, as was President Pierce.
In a letter to his father, Josiah Pierce of Gorham, the younger Pierce is not very optimistic that he will receive an appointment.
He notes that the city is teeming with Mainers looking for political appointments in the new administration.
