Description
Josiah Pierce, a Portland lawyer, wrote to his parents in Gorham about his meeting with President Franklin Pierce, a distant cousin, while in Washington to take on his duties as a diplomat to Russia.
He stayed at the White House and President Pierce introduced the younger Pierce to his cabinet and to the Secretary of State who would be Josiah's new boss.
