Josiah Pierce letter from Berlin, 1855

Description

Josiah Pierce (1827-1913), writing to his parents in Gorham, describes his visit to Berlin in 1855, while on his way to a diplomatic post in St. Petersburg, Russia.

He traveled by ship from Boston to Britain, where he visited London and other cities, then visited Paris. He notes that the only diary of his travels is the letters he has written home.

The letter covers his activities from Nov. 14, 1855, when he was was still in France, to his departure from Paris on Nov. 20, along with his arrival in Berlin.

Pierce, an 1846 graduate of Bowdoin College, was a lawyer practicing in Portland before obtaining the overseas post.
