Description
Josiah Pierce, a native of Gorham, graduate of Bowdoin College, and lawyer, used letters to his parents in Gorham as a travel diary of his tour of Europe on his way to a diplomatic post in St. Petersburg, Russia.
This letter is dated Dec. 3 (15), but includes further descriptions on his time in Paris, Berlin, and Warsaw in November 1855. He describes visits to buildings, cultural events, shopping and his travels across Europe by railroad.
He was unable to obtain a seat on the "Diligence" to get to St. Petersburg, so traveled along the post roads by private carriage, with two American doctors with whom he was traveling and serving as translator.
The carriage, provided by the Czar, was drawn by six horses and the travelers ate and slept in the carriage, traveling day and night.
The log spans November 12 to December 3, 1855.
