Josiah Pierce letter on activities in Russia, 1856

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Serving as Secretary of the American Legation in St. Petersburg, Russia, Josiah Pierce (1827-1913) wrote to his parents in Gorham, "If I can serve my country in any valuable manner while in this occupation I shall be contented and remain in it as long as it is good for me or my native land."

He reported on his activities and expressed his continuing concern that his valuable collection of books, still in Portland, should be labeled with his name.
