Description
Josiah Pierce, secretary to the American Legation in St. Petersburg, Russia, wrote to his mother, describing the celebration held after a peace treaty was signed ending the Crimean War with England and France.
He also comments on his salary, which he describes as "too small for my official position in this every expensive city."
He describes religious ceremonies he has attended, comments on the increasing daylight and on his lodgings.
