Description
Josiah Pierce, a native of Gorham, wrote to his father about attending the many coronation ceremonies for Russian Czar Alexander II in Moscow in September 1856.
Pierce (1827-1913) was serving as secretary to the American legation in St. Petersburg. He had previously written to his parents about his arrival in Moscow and earlier parts of the ceremonies.
He also comments on American politics and his wish to be at home "fighting in the battle of this year's political strife, for the preservatiion of our Constitutional principles, and against that reckless sectional party whose success would be fraught."
The Pierces were active in Democratic politics.
