Description
Writing to his father, Josiah Pierce of Gorham, Josiah Pierce commented that he was not sure when he would return to Maine.
He had been in St. Petersburg, Russia, for more than a year as secretary to the American Legation there. He planned to tell the State Department that he needed to leave that post, but would consider a different one.
Pierce repeatedly commented in letters to his family that he was paid too little to live on in the expensive Russian city.
He also commented on the Russian Carnival, held in the days preceding the beginning of Lent. Once Lent began, he said, "all weddings, balls, theatrical entertainments, parties and meat dinners are postponed ... by Orthodox Russians."
