Josiah Pierce on European job, 1857

Description

Josiah Pierce, who had worked for two years as secretary to the American Legation in Russia, wrote to his father seeking his advice on taking a job with Winans, Harrison & Winans.

The American firm was managing the Moscow Railway and offered Pierce a job -- for five or six years -- to manage its correspondence with the Russian government.

He had been considering a further diplomatic post or returning to Maine. He wrote that he was being considered as Charge d'Affaires to Persia as well.
