Description
Josiah Pierce (1827-1913) wrote to his mother about his return to St. Petersburg, Russia, with his new wife, Martha Lander.
The couple were married in late April when Pierce went to the U.S. after having lived in Russia for about two and a half years, working as secretary for the American Legation in St. Petersburg.
He returned to the U.S. for several months, not telling his family in advance that he planned to be married.
Josiah and Martha were living in a hotel in St. Petersburg, waiting for a house to be ready. He had started a new job taking care of correspondence for Winans, Harrison & Winans, an American company that was managing the Moscow Railway.
