Description
The Hallowell Army Observation Post was located on the west side of High Street. It was manned by Hallowell residents including Marvelle Webber. Marvelle Webber also helped conduct city-wide air raid drills.
The tower housed aircraft spotters' guides, binoculars, and a telephone connected to Camp Keyes, located at the Augusta Airport. Military aircraft flew over the city en route to the European Theater. Hallowell spotters identified aircraft, recorded the number in each flight and phoned the information to Camp Keyes. In most cases, military officials were already aware of the flights and thanked the spotters for their reports.
The lower portion of the observation post housed bunks and a small cooking area.
The observation post was dismantled shortly after the war and new homes were built in the area.
