Portland Overseers of the Poor letter regarding Jesse Estes and family, 1825

Contributed by Prince Memorial Library

Description

On February 25, 1825, the Portland Board of Overseers of the Poor wrote to the Cumberland Overseers of the Poor regarding Jesse Estes, his wife and six children. The letter states that the Estes family had become chargeable in Portland as paupers, and asked that Cumberland order their removal from Portland or otherwise provide for the family. The letter also stated that the family was on Hog Island. This letter duplicates another letter written the same day stating the same essential facts. The letter is signed by Rufus Emerson, secretary of the Portland Board of Overseers of the Poor.

In 1826, the Cumberland Overseers of the Poor bound out for indenture Jacob and Samuel Easters, the son of Jesse Easters of Cumberland, and Benjamin Esters, the son of Jesse Esters of Cumberland. Cumberland Overseers of the Poor documents in the Town of Cumberland Archives list the family name as Easters, Esters and Estes.
