Description
In about 1882, when this building was first built it, was called the United Methodist Church because it was served by the same pastor, Reverend Eliazar Hutchinson, as the church on the Cumberland-Falmouth town line which Cumberland Methodists had been attending for fifty years. The two congregations were also represented by joint trustees. In 1886, under the leadership of Reverend W. P. Merrill, a revival was held at Tuttle Road which resulted in a growth of membership. That year the church was dedicated as the Cumberland Methodist Church. As a dedication gift the Yarmouth First Parish Congregational Church gave the pulpit that is still in use at Tuttle Road today.
The church on Tuttle Road and the church on the Falmouth-Cumberland town line continued under the same minister with joint trustees until 1915. At that time, the Cumberland Methodist Church was made a separate and independent charge with its own Official Board. From 1915 through the mid 1970s, the Cumberland Methodist Church has shared ministerial support with several different Methodist Churches in Yarmouth, Falmouth Foreside, Portland, South Portland and Chebeague Island.
