Description
Luther Cary of Turner petitioned the state Legislature for a bounty on mulberry trees and a bounty on silk manufacturing in Maine.
The petition includes a sample of silk Cary produced. It is signed by Luther Cary, Francis Cary, John Dillingham and Timothy Sudden.
The petition was written on separate sheets that were then attached with sealing wax to form one long sheet. They appear here separately.
The petition argues that bounties for silk manufacture will help Maine farmers, make Maine less dependent on foreign nations, and provide employment for Maine women and girls. It argues that many are employed in heavy farm work that is not suitable to them.
