Owen-Magnetic automobile, Lubec, ca. 1916, ca. 1916

Contributed by Lubec Historical Society

Description

The Owen-Magnetic luxury automobile was manufactured in Cleveland, Ohio, for the R.M. Owen & Company of New York. Its six-cylinder gasoline engine spun a generator which powered an electric motor driving the wheels, similar to a hybrid but lacking batteries. Selling from $3,000 to $5,000, the vehicle demanded the extravagant affluence such as that of Bion M. Pike, Lubec sardine and steam ferry businessman. This photograph shows Pike seated with his daughter Evelyn driving, Lubec businessman Calvin H. Clark standing alongside. The photograph was taken on Pleasant Street with Monument Lot (a gift to the Town from Pike) in the background.
