Description

Captain Robert J. Peacock II supplies this annotation. “To the right was the pipe shop with fittings upstairs. In the middle was the diesel engine rebuild, the metal fabrication shop, and the machine shop. To the left was the salt shed where 80 lb. or 40 kg. bags of salt were stored. On the upper floor to the right was pipe fittings storage, in the upper middle a very complete carpenter shop and wood drying shop, and to the left a boat equipment storage shop.

“The weir pile driver visible was being repaired for the Boot Cove weir (I worked on it). The facility was capable of repairing anything on a sardine carrier (including electronics and radars) and the seines. The shops were very complete and as of 2010 a lot of the equipment is in Peter Boyce’s shop in North Lubec.
“The shops maintained about nine sardine carriers, two seiners, and for many years had the contract to do all the engine work on the Coast Guard’s 671’s in the 44, 41, and 36 foot boats.

“There was a full time staff including Max, machinist; Rachel West, engine mechanic; Raymond Moores, welder, and various carpenters and boat fitters. This facility also maintained boats for other sardine and fish factories and maintained trucks, trailers, and forklifts as well as my grandfather’s (Carroll Peacock) hanger and airplane.

“It was a fun place to grow up and one of the reasons I had such a successful career in the Merchant Marine and Navy. A perfect vocational-technical school.”
