Description
The Classical & Scientific Academy was located on the corner of Central and Warren Streets. It was a boarding and day school affiliated with the Congregational denomination in Maine. The school was open to both sexes and secondary level Hallowell students attended the day school because the city did not have a high school.
This stereo view was taken from the Powder House Hill between 1874 and December. 1878. The top of the Huntington House appears between the Academy and Cotton Mill by the Kennebec River. The Huntington House was built in 1874. The steeple of Old South Congregational Church appears as a dark tower to the right with the Kennebec River behind it. Old South Church burned to the ground in December of 1878. The Baptist Church, before it lost its steeple, is to the far left. The Federal-style Thomas Bond House, to the right of the Academy, was remodeled with Victorian features between the time this photograph was taken and 1900.
